If you work (or live) in downtown Portland and haven’t had a Schnitzelwich, you don’t know what you’re missing.

This deliciousness comes from the Tábor cart at the corner of SW 5th and SW Stark downtown. It’s the bright-red cart (2 or 3 carts down from the corner). It’s absolutely delicious and worth every penny of the $6 it costs.

Japanese Garden.

Tiff had the day off today, so I took the day off and we went up to the Japanese Garden. We each took a bunch of pictures:

The ones I took were taken with a Canon Powershot SD630 and Tiff took hers with the camera on her phone (a Sony Ericsson W810i which takes some pretty good pictures). I really should’ve taken the Digital Rebel. Oh well, next time.

Tonight (at around 9:30pm local time), we had a 2.6 magnitude earthquake in downtown Portland. The epicenter was apparently near the intersection of SW 5th and Madison.

Even though we don’t live downtown anymore, I still felt it out here. The house shook for about 5 seconds and it was over. Nothing major, but if you happen to be watching any of the local news channels (particularly KGW), you’d think half of the city was destroyed. Ah well, at least it’s better than what they’re usually talking about.

Woo! Air conditioning!

This weekend is supposed to be so hot that we’ll come close to breaking the hottest temperature ever recorded in Portland:

With that in mind—and since we’ll be out of town Sunday for the Red Sox vs Mariners game—we bought an air conditioner last night so the dogs don’t bake while we’re gone. We finished rearranging the office last night and installed the air conditioner this morning. What a pain, but at least it’s done and will stay cool in here—it’s a balmy 65°F right now ;-)

As I sit here typing this, it’s currently 97°F outside. It’s probably pretty damn close inside too since the fans are doing nothing but blowing hot air around. The high today is supposed to hit 103°F, and it’s supposed to be even hotter tomorrow. Ugh.

When the hell did we move to Arizona? This isn’t Portland weather. Bring back the mid-60s to mid-70s so I can go outside again without having my flesh melt. That is all.

Portland chooses MetroFi to provide wireless

The city of Portland has announced that it chose MetroFi to provide a combination of free, advertising-supported, and paid wireless service over the 134 square miles of the city. According to the article, it should be live in one to two years. Let me be the first to say woo hoo! :-)

We're moving...

Tiff and I are moving. We finally got sick of apartment living and found a house to rent in Hillsdale in SW Portland. I think we’re both going to miss the convenience of living right downtown, but the new place was too good a deal to pass up. It’s a 3 bedroom house with a fenced yard and a huge deck. It’s in a great neighborhood and the rent is only $45 more than we’re paying now.

We love the apartment we’re in (but not necessarily the building), but the bottom line is that we’re going to be happier in the house (and the dogs will be too). We got the keys and signed the lease yesterday, so we’re probably going to start moving this weekend with the plan being to be finished and moved in by the end of the month. Wish us luck, eh :-)

West Linn HS student expelled for film

Brandon Flyte, a senior at West Linn High School (West Linn is about 20-25 mins south of Portland) was expelled for a film he did for a class project called Brokeback High (a gay love story). He’s been posting updates over on his site; definitely worth reading.

The school district and those in charge decided a “mandatory transfer” to Clackamas Community College was “the best thing for him”. *Sigh* Way to tell kids that bigotry, prejudice, and being homophobic are ok (and encouraged). After all, why deal with the issues facing people in this country when you can just ship them off elsewhere?

Ugh. I’ve finally lost the little faith I had left in humanity.
